Open Space Adds OutSCIder Science Lesson Plans and Videos

Author // INFOhio Staff Tuesday, 23 July 2024

Created by Hamilton County ESC STEM Coach, Chris Anderson, OutSCIder Classroom is a video series that teaches students science and environmental stewardship through our National Parks. Accompanying the videos are 11 lesson plans aligned to Ohio’s Learning Standards and built using the 5E instructional model, which includes activities for students to engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate. The lesson plans are in Google Docs, making copying, sharing, and editing easy for teachers. See all 24 instructional materials in Open Space.

In one lesson plan on the rock cycle, students watch and discuss a short video featuring Acadia National Park. The lesson's activity simulates different rock types using candy, identifying different types of sample rocks, analyzing a geologic map of Acadia, then building a museum on their local geology. The lesson plan links to student sheets for each lesson component and an evaluation rubric.

Open Space is a curriculum curation and collaboration tool from INFOhio that empowers educators to build community through groups, access curated collections, search for freely accessible instructional materials, and curate and share resources that promote innovative and collaborative learning.
